Job description
At Toku, we create bespoke cloud communications and customer engagement solutions to reimagine customer experiences for enterprises. We provide an end-to-end approach to help businesses overcome the complexity of digital transformation and deliver mission-critical CX through cloud communication solutions. Toku combines local strategic consulting expertise, bespoke technology, regional in-country infrastructure, connectivity, and global reach to serve the diverse needs of enterprises operating at scale. Headquartered in Singapore, Toku supports customers across APAC and beyond, with a growing footprint across global markets.
This is our most senior hands-on infrastructure engineering role, responsible for setting the technical direction, architecture, and engineering standards across our infrastructure platforms. Working alongside the VP of Infrastructure, you will lead the design and implementation of modern cloud and hybrid infrastructure, mentor engineers, and drive automation, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence. This role combines deep technical expertise with architectural leadership, helping shape the future of Toku's infrastructure estate. You will thrive in this role if you enjoy solving complex infrastructure challenges while influencing engineering standards through technical leadership rather than people management.
Job requirements
What you will be doing
Technical architecture & infrastructure leadership: Act as the senior technical authority for infrastructure engineering, designing scalable, resilient, and secure infrastructure solutions across AWS, Azure, hybrid cloud and on-premise environments while influencing engineering best practices across the team.
Cloud architecture & implementation: Design, build and optimise cloud infrastructure platforms, selecting appropriate cloud services, architectures and deployment patterns that support engineering and business requirements while balancing scalability, reliability, security and operational simplicity.
AWS platform engineering: Lead the design, implementation and optimisation of AWS infrastructure, driving adoption of modern cloud services and best practices while improving the team's technical capability across the AWS ecosystem.
Azure platform expansion: Lead the design and secure implementation of Azure Landing Zone architecture and establish scalable Azure infrastructure foundations to support future business requirements.
Infrastructure as Code & automation: Own and champion Infrastructure as Code practices using Terraform and related tooling, building reusable modules, improving environment consistency, reducing configuration drift, and driving automation across development, staging, UAT and production environments.
CI/CD & platform engineering: Improve deployment pipelines, release processes and infrastructure delivery standards, ensuring infrastructure changes are repeatable, auditable and consistently deployed across all environments.
Engineering standards & technical governance: Establish infrastructure design standards, architecture principles, documentation standards and technical best practices, providing technical guidance and design reviews across infrastructure initiatives.
Mentoring & technical leadership: Mentor cloud and infrastructure engineers through technical coaching, architectural guidance, code reviews and knowledge sharing, helping raise the overall capability and maturity of the team.
Reliability & operational excellence: Improve infrastructure resilience through monitoring, observability, capacity planning, disaster recovery, high availability design, root cause analysis and continual service improvement.
Infrastructure security: Embed security best practices into infrastructure design, including identity and access management, infrastructure hardening, secure network design, vulnerability remediation and cloud security controls, while partnering closely with dedicated security specialists where required.
Hybrid infrastructure: Contribute to the design, operation and optimisation of hybrid infrastructure spanning public cloud, on-premise environments and physical infrastructure where appropriate.
Technology evaluation & optimisation: Evaluate emerging infrastructure technologies, cloud services and tooling, recommending improvements that increase operational efficiency, simplify management, reduce technical debt and optimise infrastructure cost.
Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with Engineering, Product and Infrastructure leadership to translate application requirements into robust infrastructure solutions, providing technical expertise throughout project delivery.
We'd love to hear from you if you have
Experience level: Around 10+ years of infrastructure engineering experience, including significant experience designing and delivering production cloud infrastructure within complex technology environments.
Cloud architecture (core requirement): Deep hands-on experience designing and implementing AWS infrastructure in production environments. Experience with Azure architecture and Landing Zone implementation would be highly advantageous.
AWS platform expertise: Strong practical experience across core AWS services including EC2, ECS/EKS, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, CloudFront, Route53 and related networking and security services, with the ability to evaluate and implement newer AWS managed services where appropriate.
Infrastructure as Code: Extensive hands-on experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform as a primary tool. Experience with CloudFormation, Pulumi or AWS CDK would be advantageous.
Platform engineering & CI/CD: Strong experience designing infrastructure delivery pipelines, deployment automation and modern platform engineering practices, with practical knowledge of CI/CD tooling and multi-environment deployment strategies.
Containers & orchestration: Strong experience with Kubernetes and container platforms, particularly within cloud-native production environments.
Architecture & engineering standards: Demonstrated experience defining infrastructure architecture, establishing engineering standards, reviewing technical designs and improving technical maturity across engineering teams.
Automation & scripting: Strong automation mindset with practical experience developing infrastructure automation, scripting and operational tooling.
Hybrid infrastructure: Experience operating across cloud, hybrid and on-premise infrastructure environments, with exposure to networking, storage and physical infrastructure considered advantageous.
Infrastructure reliability: Strong experience designing highly available systems, improving observability, conducting incident investigations, performing root cause analysis, and implementing disaster recovery and resilience strategies.
Security awareness: Practical understanding of cloud security, infrastructure hardening, IAM, secure networking and infrastructure security best practices. Experience partnering with cybersecurity teams would be beneficial.
Linux & networking: Good working knowledge of Linux systems administration and cloud networking principles. Deep specialist Linux administration is not essential, but candidates should be comfortable operating within Linux-based environments.
Technical leadership: Proven ability to mentor engineers, influence technical direction, communicate architectural decisions and raise engineering standards without relying on formal people management authority.
Commercial awareness: Experience evaluating infrastructure technologies, balancing technical excellence with operational efficiency and cost optimisation.
Location: This role is to be based in Malaysia – KL preferred. It will operate on a mostly WFH basis for the time being, but in the future may require a hybrid WFH/WFO model in our KL Sentral office.
