Job description
At Toku, we create bespoke cloud communications and customer engagement solutions to reimagine customer experiences for enterprises. We provide an end-to-end approach to help businesses overcome the complexity of digital transformation and deliver mission-critical CX through cloud communication solutions. Toku combines local strategic consulting expertise, bespoke technology, regional in-country infrastructure, connectivity, and global reach to serve the diverse needs of enterprises operating at scale.
Headquartered in Singapore, Toku supports customers across APAC and beyond, with a growing footprint across global markets. As a publicly listed company, Toku continues to scale its presence and impact across international markets.
This is a senior, hands-on cloud database engineering role focused on improving the reliability, scalability and operational excellence of Toku's production database platform. Working closely with our Lead Database Engineer, you will own production operations, solve complex incidents, automate repetitive database workflows, and help modernise how engineering and database teams collaborate. Rather than simply administering databases, you'll improve the systems, processes and tooling that keep our platform running at scale. You will thrive in this role if you enjoy taking ownership, solving complex operational challenges, and continuously finding better ways of working.
Job requirements
What you will be doing
Production Database Operations: Own the day-to-day operation, health, availability and continuous improvement of Toku's production MySQL databases running on AWS RDS, ensuring reliability across our global SaaS platform.
Incident Management & Operational Ownership: Take ownership of production incidents, perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis, restore service quickly, and drive permanent improvements that reduce repeat operational issues.
Automation & Process Improvement: Identify repetitive operational work, evaluate where automation delivers the greatest value, and build scalable workflows and tooling that reduce manual effort, operational risk and engineering overhead.
Database Workflow Engineering: Improve how database changes, production data fixes and operational requests are managed by introducing safer, more auditable and scalable engineering processes.
Engineering Collaboration: Partner closely with software engineers to understand application behaviour, investigate production issues, interpret logs, and improve the interaction between engineering and database operations.
Database Performance & Optimisation: Monitor and optimise database performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, capacity planning and proactive performance analysis.
AWS Database Engineering: Manage and continuously improve AWS database services, with a strong focus on Amazon RDS while supporting Toku's ongoing evolution towards Amazon Aurora.
Monitoring & Observability: Utilise monitoring platforms such as Datadog and AWS Performance Insights to identify trends, troubleshoot production issues, and improve operational visibility.
Security, Compliance & Governance: Apply secure database practices, improve operational governance, support audit readiness, and help reduce operational risks associated with production database management.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Support and continuously improve high availability and disaster recovery capabilities while leveraging modern AWS managed database services.
Continuous Improvement: Challenge existing ways of working, identify opportunities to eliminate operational toil, and contribute ideas that improve the long-term scalability of the database platform.
On-call Support: Participate in a shared on-call rotation (approximately two weeks per month), responding to production incidents outside normal business hours when required.
We'd love to hear from you if you have
Cloud Database Engineering: Around 5–8 years of hands-on experience operating production databases within AWS cloud environments.
AWS Expertise: Strong practical experience with Amazon RDS is essential.
Database Technologies: Strong production experience administering and optimising MySQL databases.
Cloud-native Mindset: Experience managing cloud-managed database services rather than traditional on-premise database infrastructure.
Automation & Scripting: Practical experience automating operational tasks using scripting languages such as Python, SQL or similar. You should be comfortable validating, adapting and maintaining automation rather than performing repetitive manual work.
Production Operations: Experience supporting business-critical production systems, participating in incident response, and operating within an on-call environment.
Performance Engineering: Strong capability in query optimisation, indexing, performance troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
AWS Platform Knowledge: Good understanding of AWS networking fundamentals, including security groups and the infrastructure concepts required to troubleshoot production database environments.
Engineering Collaboration: Experience working closely alongside software engineering teams, with a solid understanding of modern software development lifecycles and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and infrastructure.
Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to investigate unfamiliar production issues, learn independently, and develop practical solutions without relying solely on predefined procedures.
Ownership & Communication: A strong sense of ownership, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to driving work through to completion while keeping stakeholders informed.
Learning Agility: Curiosity and initiative to quickly understand complex production environments, continuously improve existing processes, and embrace new technologies as the platform evolves.
Additional experience that would be advantageous: Experience with Amazon Aurora, MariaDB, Linux production environments, Datadog or similar observability platforms, AWS Performance Insights, or previous software engineering experience.
Location: This is a remote role based in India, with Bangalore strongly preferred.
Toku has been recognised as a LinkedIn Top Startup and by the Financial Times as one of APAC's Top 500 High Growth Companies. If you're looking to be part of a company on a strong growth trajectory while working on meaningful, real-world challenges, we'd love to hear from you.
