Staff Software Engineer – Platform Engineering

  • Remote, Hybrid
    • Rotterdam, Utrecht, Netherlands

Job description

At Toku, we create bespoke cloud communications and customer engagement solutions to reimagine customer experiences for enterprises. We provide an end-to-end approach to help businesses overcome the complexity of digital transformation and deliver mission-critical CX through cloud communication solutions. Toku combines local strategic consulting expertise, bespoke technology, regional in-country infrastructure, connectivity, and global reach to serve the diverse needs of enterprises operating at scale.

Headquartered in Singapore, Toku supports customers across APAC and beyond, with a growing footprint across global markets. As a publicly listed company, Toku continues to scale its presence and impact across international markets.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be one of Toku’s most senior individual contributors, helping shape the architecture and technical direction of our cloud communications platform. You will combine hands-on engineering with cross-team technical leadership, working across distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, platform engineering, observability and infrastructure automation. You will influence Technical Leads and senior engineers while remaining close to the code and solving complex engineering problems yourself. You will thrive in this role if you enjoy turning complex platform challenges into scalable, reliable and pragmatic engineering solutions.

Job requirements

What you will be doing

  • Platform architecture: Shape the evolution of Toku’s platform architecture, helping unify our CCaaS, UCaaS and CPaaS capabilities into a scalable and cohesive platform.

  • Technical direction: Translate business and product priorities into technical strategy, architecture and pragmatic engineering roadmaps that can evolve over multiple years.

  • Hands-on engineering: Remain deeply technical and hands-on, designing, building, reviewing and improving production systems while tackling complex engineering problems that require senior-level judgement.

  • Distributed systems: Design scalable, resilient distributed systems and microservices, reasoning about service boundaries, performance, failure modes, scalability, reliability and architectural trade-offs.

  • Cloud-native engineering: Design and evolve services on AWS using cloud-native patterns, containerisation with Docker and Kubernetes, and modern platform engineering practices.

  • Infrastructure as Code: Drive scalable infrastructure automation and abstraction using Terraform and associated tooling such as Terragrunt and Atlantis.

  • APIs & platform integration: Establish scalable API-first patterns using technologies such as Kong, AWS API Gateway and OpenAPI, enabling services and platform capabilities to integrate cleanly and consistently.

  • Observability & reliability: Establish strong observability practices across metrics, logs and distributed tracing, using tooling such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Datadog, Sentry and CloudWatch to improve platform reliability and reduce detection and recovery times.

  • Delivery & automation: Partner with DevOps and engineering teams to improve CI/CD, GitOps, infrastructure provisioning, deployment automation, zero-downtime releases and database deployment/migration processes.

  • Security & identity: Help shape secure platform architecture and authentication patterns using technologies and standards such as Keycloak, JWT, OAuth2 and OIDC, embedding DevSecOps principles into engineering practices.

  • Data architecture: Guide database design, performance and scalability across SQL and NoSQL systems, helping teams make appropriate architectural decisions for production workloads.

  • Cross-team technical leadership: Influence architecture and engineering standards across squads, working closely with Technical Leads, Engineering Managers and senior engineers without relying on formal reporting authority.

  • Engineering mentorship: Mentor senior engineers and Technical Leads, raise engineering standards through design and code reviews, and encourage strong ownership, pragmatic decision-making and continuous technical improvement.

We’d love to hear from you if you have

  • Staff-level engineering experience: Significant experience as a senior individual contributor designing and evolving complex production software systems, with the ability to influence technical direction across multiple engineering teams.

  • Backend engineering: Deep hands-on software engineering expertise, ideally including strong Go experience, with practical experience across technologies such as Python and Node.js/NestJS/TypeScript. Familiarity with ReactJS is useful when working across the wider platform.

  • Distributed systems & architecture: Strong experience designing scalable distributed systems, microservices and production architectures, including resilience, performance, reliability, failure modes and architectural trade-offs.

  • AWS & cloud-native engineering: Strong experience designing and operating production systems on AWS, including practical knowledge of cloud-native architecture and services.

  • Kubernetes & containers: Strong practical experience with Kubernetes and Docker in production environments.

  • Infrastructure as Code: Strong hands-on experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices; experience with Terragrunt, Atlantis or similar tooling is advantageous.

  • Platform engineering: Experience building shared platform capabilities, infrastructure abstractions or engineering systems that improve scalability, reliability and developer effectiveness across multiple teams.

  • APIs & integration architecture: Strong experience designing APIs and service integrations; experience with Kong, AWS API Gateway, OpenAPI or similar technologies is beneficial.

  • Observability & production engineering: Strong experience with production observability, monitoring and troubleshooting using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Datadog, Sentry, CloudWatch or comparable platforms.

  • CI/CD & GitOps: Practical experience with modern CI/CD, GitOps and deployment automation, including technologies such as GitHub Actions or similar.

  • Security & authentication: Practical knowledge of modern authentication and identity patterns such as JWT, OAuth2 and OIDC; experience with Keycloak or similar identity platforms is advantageous.

  • Databases: Strong experience designing and operating production data solutions across SQL and/or NoSQL technologies, with an understanding of performance, scalability and migration considerations.

  • Technical leadership: A track record of setting technical direction, challenging assumptions constructively, mentoring experienced engineers and influencing architectural decisions across teams.

  • Problem ownership: The ability to move from ambiguous platform or engineering problems to pragmatic solutions, balancing long-term architecture with the realities of shipping and operating production software.

  • Communications domain (bonus): Experience with CCaaS, UCaaS, CPaaS, messaging, voice, telephony or other high-scale communications platforms would be advantageous.

  • Location: This role can be based in The Netherlands (Hybrid) or wider Europe (remote).

Toku has been recognised as a LinkedIn Top Startup and by the Financial Times as one of APAC’s Top 500 High Growth Companies. If you’re looking to be part of a company on a strong growth trajectory while working on meaningful, real-world challenges, we’d love to hear from you.
